The hourly wage for apprentices is a percentage of the journeyperson's rate. They start at 60% of the journeyperson's rate, and with each 2,000 hours worked, the wage goes up 10%.
After the apprentice has completed 8,000 hours and finished all required
courses, they can write the exam for the certificate of qualification as a
construction millwright. Once they've obtained the certificate, they will be paid a full journeyperson's wages.
Millwrights who have obtained their certificate as a construction millwright are also qualified to write the exam for their industrial millwright certificate or the inter-provincial licence.
To apply to the union, you must be at least 16 years old, and have a minimum Grade 10 education and a mechanical aptitude. We may consider prior education and related work experience for possible credits to reduce the length of the apprenticeship program.
This job is for a generalist - someone with a good basic understanding of
machines and how they work. You must be able to solve problems and decide which job gets priority. Physical strength is also an asset.
